Featuring architects Héctor Fernández Elorza, Alejandro Muñoz Miranda, Pedro Pablo Arroyo Alba, and José María Hurtado de Mendoza (Estudio Entresitio).

A new generation of Spanish architects is blazing new ground globally. This exhibition features a generation of architects under 40 who show their talent through original and often inspirational projects. Their work is characterized by the construction quality of their buildings and a sensitivity to the surrounding environment, whether natural or cultural. The exhibition will be on view at the Latino Cultural Center from November 10, 2011-January 7, 2012.

The presentation of Young Architects of Spain: A Window to the Unknown in Dallas is part of the cultural program SPAIN arts&culture. It is made possible through the generous support of the Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID in Spanish) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Spanish Housing Ministry, the Spain-USA Foundation, and the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C. Special thanks to The Honorable Janet Kafka, Honorary Consul of Spain in Dallas, for her efforts to bring this exhibition to Dallas.

Texas Society of Architects is Assembling a group of volunteers to help at the 2011 TSA Convention in Dallas on Oct 27-29. This is a preliminary call for any volunteer interest to help with the numerous volunteer options throughout the convention weekend.

This is a nice opportunity to mix and mingle as well as attend some of the optional (paid) events; such as tours, continuing education, and the welcome party.

The 2011 AIA Knowledge Scholarship seeks skilled individuals to utilize social media to capture and share knowledge from AIA Knowledge Community fall conferences to AIA members around the globe.

Each 2011 AIA Knowledge Scholarship will fund a dedicated and knowledgeable person to attend a Knowledge Community fall conference in order to cover the event via social media, capture the content and deliver a variety of products to wider audiences during and after the conference. Gloria’s Restaurant – Tour with the Architect, Matthew Crittenden

Arts Institute of Dallas students of the Interior Design program will meet today at the actual restaurant for a guided tour with the designer, winner of the Dallas AIA YAF inaugural 10 Under Ten competition, young architect Matthew Crittenden!

This guided visit provides a great example for students since they are designing a similar but smaller signature restaurant for about 100 patrons with exterior seating, lounge, bar/dining and specialty spaces depending on restaurant venue.

Hilda M. Rodriguez Mercado, RID, is the instructor of the Hospitality Interior Design Studio IV at the Arts Institute of Dallas. She has her own Architecture and Interior Design practice here in Dallas. Currently, she is a member of the steering committee and the Competitions Director of the AIA Dallas Young Architects Forum.

Speed Portfolio Review

Please join the Young Architects Forum in conjunction with the Associates Committee Wednesday July 27, 2001 from 630p to 830p at the Dallas Center for Architecture for Speed Portfolio Review.

The Associates Committee and Young Architects Forum would like to invite all interested Emerging Professionals who are looking to improve their career/professional portfolios in terms of content, presentation and effective communication. In an informal and "rapid-fire" format, established and diversely experienced professionals from the local architecture community will be reviewing and providing feedback to attendees. The reviews with each critic will be roughly 5 minutes or less in order to allow each person to receive multiple perspectives. Polish your professional portfolio and bring it to the Speed Portfolio event for a fast paced, friendly round of review.

The intent of this "Speed Portfolio Review" is to assist emerging professionals in developing and maintaining their professional portfolios, not to mimic an interview or imply intent to hire. This feedback will undoubtedly be helpful if one is looking to get their portfolio prepared for further employment opportunities.

Calling all Young Architect:

Please join the AIA Dallas Latinos in Architecture for the second year of "From an Architect's Bookshelf"!

This book donation/library development program would provide local educational institutions with books that are essential for the teaching and research of Architecture but too costly for most schools or scholars to afford.

You are encouraged to write a note of insight or encouragement inside the cover of the book to personalize and humanize the gift to the students. You can contribute something from your personal collection or buy a book to donate.

Donations can include: Architecture, interior design, art and construction books.

Your book donation will help:

Corgan Employee wins Bird House Play House Design Competition

Newly Constructed Playhouse to be unveiled May 19^th , 2011 ,11am to 11:45am at the Trinity River Audubon Center

It was October 20, 2010 when The Trinity River Audubon Center proudly announced Cletus Pippin as the winner of their inaugural Bird House Play House Design Competition. Mr. Pippin’s design, the Roost, was chosen from amongst the five finalists of this first ever competition coordinated and organized by the Trinity River Audubon Center and the YAF – the Young Architects Forum of the American Institute of Architects Dallas Chapter. The YAF is a committee that develops and promotes activities for young architects and interns while providing opportunities for networking, professional development, and recognition.

This competition invited State of Texas registered architects, architectural interns, and architectural students enrolled in an accredited Texas University or architecture high school program to design a life-sized play bird house. Fourteen entrants accepted this unique chance to design a bird-themed play house that would fit appropriately into the Center’s Children’s Discovery Garden. Each were asked to keep in mind the Center’s desire to maximize use of sustainable materials and have as little an impact on our environment as possible.

Mr. Pippin, an architect with Corgan Associates, designed a structure that not only looks like a bird house, but also provides a learning tool with his “Discovery Matrix” – an interior wall with multiple “hidey-holes” inviting young learners to peek inside to learn something new about birds. Director of the Center, Chris Culak, was thrilled: “Not only does this design best fit the specs for the competition it truly helps us to fulfill our mission to educate the public and to help preserve our natural wildlife. This building will provide a great play area and give lessons!”

The sponsors of this first ever Bird House Play House design competition are Jennifer & Ed Junker. These two folks love the outdoors and good design and were able to combine both their passions in this one project: “We were thrilled to see so many outstanding entries. All of them deserve recognition. Now, we just can’t wait to see Mr. Pippin’s design take fruition and come to life.”Construction of the winner’s plans should occur by April 2011.

The other finalists included Julian Debo – Skyline High School Architecture Cluster, Dan Fletcher – SHW Group, Clemente Jacquez Herrera – RTKL Associates, and Mario Ortiz – Westwood College. The Trinity River Audubon Center (TRAC) opened October 2008 and serves as a flagship location for the National Audubon Society’s mission to conserve and restore ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife and their habitat for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity. TRAC is located just eight minutes from downtown Dallas on 120 acres of the Great Trinity Forest – the largest urban bottomland hardwood forest in the United States. Lighting 101: Pendant Lighting

Lighting is not as simple as selecting a lamp type that matches your style and fits within a project's budget. The type of light a fixture creates in a room is also an important, if not the most important, factor in selecting lighting. This article covers the differing lighting effects that can be produced with pendant lighting.

Direct Lighting

The function of a direct lighting pendant is easy to remember. Downward focused pendants cast light directly onto the target surface. Direct lighting is best used on task surfaces such as tables and counters. Surface glare should be taken into account when selecting direct fixtures.

Indirect Lighting

An easy way to remember indirect lighting is that it is the opposite of direct lighting. Indirect pendant fixtures cast light upward onto a surface so that it bounces back into the space. Accent lighting is a common use for this type of light fixture.

Direct-Indirect Lighting

A combination of direct and indirect lighting, direct-indirect fixtures cast light downward and upward. These fixtures create targeted lighting for tasks as well as softer general lighting. Select direct-indirect fixture types to achieve the correct ratio of direct to indirect lighting for your project. As with direct fixtures, surface glare is an important selection factor.

Diffuse Lighting

If you are looking for a fixture that casts light uniformly you want to select a diffuse lighting style of pendant. Diffuse pendants cast in all directions. Examples of diffuse pendant types include bare lamps, globes, and chandeliers. To avoid glare, select fixtures that do not directly expose the light bulb.

A Place of My Own… A place of My Own Making

Michael Pollan might be better known for his work relating to what we put on our plates on a daily basis. Over his twenty five year career as an author, he has been the creator of four New York Times bestsellers: Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual (2010); In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto (2008); The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals (2006) and The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World (2001). But the purpose of this blog entry is to get you interested in none of these.

In 1991, Mr. Pollan decided to write a book based on his own experience: “A place of My Own”. It happened to fall on my lap (literally) while I was at home on a long recovery from surgery. This is probably why it caused such an impression on me. Unable to move much or get out of my home, this book really made me wish I could build things from scratch as soon as I was able to. It brought me back to my college days in architecture school, this ideal world of building hypothesis of space. Hopefully what follows will make you browse thru this book… and maybe read it all. Who knows, maybe it will stir something within you; a desire you thought had lost as an architect or re-discover it, wherever your career may be at this point.

Rather than giving you a summary of what this book is about, my attempt is to entice you with little fragments that inspired me in new ways I had not imagined before in my practice of architecture. In a way, Pollan’s book is a bibliography of sorts, where every chapter is filled with references to famous architects, architectural and philosophy theorists, architectural magazines and architectural dilemmas. You can honestly tell that he did his homework before creating this “diary” of his experience in building (with his own hands) a writer’s retreat, his own “Architecture of daydreams”. It was his own journey in the discovery of Architecture that gave me a fresh look at what we Architects do, but most importantly, a reaffirmation on the why we do what we do.

Pollan had not built before, unless it was creating worlds of words. He starts by saying that “Architects do their work on the frontier between the ideal and the practical”. This has been the eternal struggle of our practice. Rather than continue to fight with it, we should all embrace it and continue to find the possibilities within these limits. Mastering the ends of the spectrum and establishing a balance is in my opinion what has defined some of the most important works in the field of Architecture. I found so inspiring that a person with no knowledge or education in design or construction was able to accomplish his own office-home-office with such an attention to detail. In seeking the guidance of an Architect and learning the ways from a master carpenter he shows his reader the importance he places on these two figures.

Throughout his book, Pollan attempts to create a thread that explains to him the different styles or philosophies in architecture. Then he attempts to explain all of these to his readers. A sample statement is how “The Vanna Venturi house is the mother of all literary architecture, of every word-bound building I’d hurt my head on in Progressive Architecture”. Do we really need words to explain our designs? I believe we should not. Complex and convoluted explanations of our work may make for good discussion amongst our peers, but a building is not experienced in words but in walls, color, texture, light, volume and time.

Two lessons on the realm of the pragmatic that will stay with me include: “The easiest way for an architect to avoid problems with his roof is to pay more attention to vernacular practice” and also that “… to a carpenter, waste is one of the forms poor craftsmanship takes. Whatever the architectural logic that dictated designing a wall one inch off of such a canonical dimension, to a carpenter it represented sheer perversity, a slap in the face of tradition, common sense, and frugality”

Finally, a lesson on the immeasurable in Architecture:

“… we pay way too much attention to the design of places, when it is what we routinely do in them that gives them their character. It is our sense of time, our sense of ritual and everyday occurrence, which in the long run creates our sense of place”. Architecture is also found in the nuances of culture.

Whether you are a seasoned practitioner, an architecture student or your career is just starting, this book is sure to make you itch and go get your carpenter tools. It is a good lesson on how detached some of us have become in a profession that deals with stone, concrete, wood. How many times do we get to truly become involved in decisions on the field? And I am not talking about decisions about a color or a texture, but about how a construction detail may evolve on the site, and become a collaboration between the Architect and the Contractor, with a balance between the ideal and the practical as a common goal.

I attended the event called "Branding is More Than a Logo- What Does Your Brand Say about You?” Thursday night at the Dallas Center for Architecture.

I walked in and saw on the screen Marcela’s logo and Laura’s photo! Oh, I know those people!! Yes, I see Marcela's blog and logo all the time on Linked in… I know who she is (though I don’t know her personally – well I met her at the end of the event!). Laura, I receive invites to "Meetup" events every month and have even exchanged emails back and forth getting her help to broadcast an event – though again I don’t know her personally (but I actually met her last night!).

At this point I was more motivated to listen to this presentation… as I thought: these people not only know what they are talking about, the following it everyday and it is evident!

It was a very refreshing presentation. Very encouraging and it felt like drinking a good cup of coffee in the morning when you are still waking up. It gave me a boost to get out there and keep going; trust is key to starting your own business, be more confident about doing all it takes to bring in work.

One great thing about the two who presented, was how they made sure we saw them as normal people, accessible, and like any of us – well actually not exactly like everyone, if you think about it for a minute. They did not just land where they are without working towards it. You have to go for it! Their success comes from working hard towards it, which is evident. It just did not happen by luck.

They not only spoke about their story but gave tips on how to make it work for a variety of talent examples, interests and goals. Their story starts only a year or two ago and they are busy, busy, busy! It is inspiring and makes us see how out of focus or off goal we can be. I left reflecting on how many excuses we can actually make to not get busy!

Brian has done an outstanding job of leading the AIA Dallas Publications Committee as editor of Columns magazine. Since coming on in 2009, Brian has brought Columns through its first successful year as a magazine, led it through a publisher fall-out in the spring of this year, and has seen it garner MarCom Platinum and SMPS National Marketing and Communications awards during his time as editor.

Brian also volunteers his time to the TSA New Media Committee, and is very involved with the CNU North Texas Chapter. Serving as vice president on their board this year, he took a leadership role in hosting conferences, and with their communications and PR efforts for their chapter.

Trinity River Audubon Center announces Winner in inaugural competition.

Children’s Play House to be built by April 2011.

Dallas Texas – October 20, 2010 – The Trinity River Audubon Center proudly announces Cletus Pippin as the winner of their inaugural Bird House Play House Design Competition. Mr. Pippin’s design, the Roost, was chosen from amongst the five finalists of this first ever competition coordinated and organized by the Trinity River Audubon Center and the YAF – the Young Architects Forum of the American Institute of Architects Dallas Chapter. The YAF is a committee that develops and promotes activities for young architects and interns while providing opportunities for networking, professional development, and recognition.

This competition invited State of Texas registered architects, architectural interns, and architectural students enrolled in an accredited Texas University or architecture high school program to design a life-sized play bird house. Fourteen entrants accepted this unique chance to design a bird-themed play house that would fit appropriately into the Center’s Children’s Discovery Garden. Each were asked to keep in mind the Center’s desire to maximize use of sustainable materials and have as little an impact on our environment as possible.

Mr. Pippin, an architect with Corgan Associates, designed a structure that not only looks like a bird house, but also provides a learning tool with his “Discovery Matrix” – an interior wall with multiple “hidey-holes” inviting young learners to peek inside to learn something new about birds. Director of the Center, Chris Culak, was thrilled: “Not only does this design best fit the specs for the competition it truly helps us to fulfill our mission to educate the public and to help preserve our natural wildlife. This building will provide a great play area and give lessons!”

The sponsors of this first ever Bird House Play House design competition are Jennifer & Ed Junker. These two folks love the outdoors and good design and were able to combine both their passions in this one project: “We were thrilled to see so many outstanding entries. All of them deserve recognition. Now, we just can’t wait to see Mr. Pippin’s design take fruition and come to life.” Construction of the winner’s plans should occur by April 2011.

The winner’s design and that of the other four finalists will be on display at the Trinity River Audubon Center and officials hope to be able to also showcase these designs at other venues across town. The other finalists included Julian Debo – Skyline High School Architecture Cluster, Dan Fletcher – SHW Group, Clemente Jacquez Herrera – RTKL Associates, and Mario Ortiz – Westwood College.

The Trinity River Audubon Center is located in south Dallas in the heart of the great Trinity Forest at 6500 S. Loop 12, Dallas, TX. 75217.

THE BIGGEST AND THE ONLY! OPEN TO ALL!

The INDEX:Award is the biggest design award in the world, with a total award sum of 500,000 euros, but this grand figure financed by the state of Denmark isn't the only aspect distinguishing the INDEX:Award from most other design Awards.

The INDEX:Award is also the main driver of INDEX:'s mission to generate more Design to Improve Life of higher quality all over the world. The award receives nominations from China to the United States, from Finland to South Africa, from Singapore to Jordan – and from these nominations, the outstanding INDEX: international jury selects the best as finalists, and the very best as winners of the biennial award.

Each of the five winners represents one of the INDEX:Award categories – Body, Home, Work, Play and Community – that together span the spectrum of human activity and are relevant and understandable to people all over the world.

The next INDEX:Award will be presented in August 2011. INDEX: will issue the call for nominations for the upcoming award cycle on September 7, 2010. Deadline for submissions is December 17, 2010.

AIA-Utah's YAF announces an awesome design competition

Ballet West: Fluid Adagio Installation (BWFAI) is a first-time-ever joint competition initiated by AIA Utah's Young Architects Forum with Salt Lake County. Local, national and international architects and designers are invited to participate in this blind competition to create a temporary installation (estimated to be 1 to 2 years) that will occupy the future building site for Utah's premiere ballet company, Ballet West. The project's site is adjacent to the historic Capitol Theater in downtown Salt Lake City and is currently vacant, thus providing a unique contextual setting in Salt Lake City's ever-changing urban fabric.

The winner of this two-stage competition will receive $46,000.00 for fabrication and installation.

"From an Architect's Bookshelf" is a book donation/library development program that will provide local high schools with books, journals and monographs that are essential for the teaching and research of Architecture but too costly for most schools or scholars to afford.

This program is a joint collaboration between the Dallas AIA and the Latinos in Architecture Chapter Committee.

Donations can include: Architecture, interior design, art and construction books.

Collections are between now and August 15 for the 2010 school year.

Capping off a six-decade career that redefined modern architecture, the great Mies van der Rohe designed a simple gas station near Montreal in 1967. This eccentric career move serves as the scaffolding for this stylish and fascinating documentary, which looks at several Mies masterpieces, including the Seagram Building and the Barcelona Pavilion. The film also includes interviews with other architecture stars such as Rem Koolhaas, Elizabeth Diller and Phyllis Lambert.

As always, a lively discussion will follow the movie.

The Mentorship program is going through some changes and we want your input. Come out and help shape the future of the Mentorship Program at this month's mixer on Monday June 14th, 6pm at the Dallas Center for Architecture.

This mixer will be different with the activity of Topical Musical Chairs. Groups comprised of Mentors and Mentees will be formed for the evening and future events. In the year 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who must live underground and the wealthy, who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor, a man from the upper class abandons his privileged life to join oppressed workers in a revolt. Perhaps the most famous and influential of all silent films, German director Fritz Lang's masterpiece has now been magnificently restored to include the original 1927 orchestral score. The film's set designs and their similarities to Modern and Art Deco architecture are still impressive.

As always, a lively discussion will follow the movie.

Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio

You are invited to attend the Dallas Premiere of Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio with special guest Deedie Rose.

Film begins at 7 p.m. with reception following. You must register to attend. There is no admission charge.

In 1993 the late architect and MacArthur Genius Samuel Mockbee along with colleague D.K. Ruth started the Rural Studio, a design/build education program at Auburn University in Alabama. At the Rural Studio, students create striking architecture for impoverished communities in Alabama's Black Belt. Guided by frank, passionate interviews with Mockbee, Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studioshows how a group of students use their creativity, ingenuity and compassion to craft a home for their charismatic, destitute client, Jimmie Lee Matthews, known to locals as Music Man because of his zeal for R&B and Soul records. The film reveals that the Rural Studio is about more than architecture and building. The Rural Studio program provides students with an experience that forever inspires them to consider how they can use their skills to better their communities. Interviews with Mockbee's peers and scenes with those he's influenced infuse the film with a larger discussion of architecture's role in issues of poverty, class, race, education, citizenship and social change.
